At Suzanne James we are dedicated to safeguarding our planet and ensuring it is treated with the respect it deserves.  One the simplest and most comprehensive ways of doing this is recycling.

Suzanne was always committed to running an ethical and sustainable business.  Of course, as any business grows, so will the amount of waste produced and so does the responsibility for handling it.

Thankfully recycling procedures have come a long in recent years and with the development of waste recycling techniques we can now say with a big smile on our faces that we have accomplished  ‘Zero Waste to Landfill’! We have achieved this through our comprehensive approach to waste management.

A whopping 80% of our waste is recycled directly and the remainder is taken via a single weekly bin collection to the SELCHP Energy Recovery Facility in Deptford where it is used to help generate electricity. We are incredibly proud of this achievement, but believe that it is only the beginning.  We continue to strive ever further, with a burning desire to continue to improve our environmental credentials. We see recycling and our zero waste to landfill status as an ongoing project, forever evolving.  We believe that with continuous research we will be able to achieve ever more at both a local and national level.

For recycling to be successful and effective it depends on us all as consumers.  We need to get into the habit of ensuring we buy recycled goods wherever possible to ‘close the recycling loop’.  Companies reusing materials to make new goods cannot survive if we don’t support them and encourage eco friendly purchasing. We fully support the use of goods made from recycled materials and are always on the look out for new products.

FACTS

Did you know you can get mouse mats made from recycled tyres, paperstone cutting boards made from recycled plastic and drinking glasses made from old wine and beer bottles?

Here is a little food for thought and some interesting facts about the recycling we have carried out this year alone. We have recycled approximately:

8,320 kilograms of glass  = 5,546 bags of flour

4,160 kilograms of plastic  = 4,160 bags of sugar

4,160 kilograms of metal = 72,983 eggs

Altogether we reckon that this is enough of the core baking ingredients to make a birthday cake for everyone in Britain!
