Like any business we have unavoidable energy requirements, and - particularly as the business has grown, with both an office and a professional kitchen to run we have become increasingly conscious of just how much energy we use.

Since October 2009 we have been recording our meter readings for both energy and water consumption on a monthly basis, and reviewing the totals annually, enabling us to have a clear understanding of our changing business needs.    An example of our engery usage over three years is shown below;

Total Electricity Consumption 2015      30,549

Whilst our total energy consumption has increased as the business has grown, we have counterbalanced this through a number of energy saving changes to our equipment and premises.  It is surprising to see how making a number of small changes such as switching to low energy light bulbs and setting PC monitors to 'sleep' after a few minutes inactivity can have such an impact on the amount of energy we use each year. This, combined with more substantial investments such as new A rated Fridges and Freezers (running from Meter 2), and new office equipment (running from Meter 3), have, as you can see, reduced the annual energy consumption on both meters in 2015.

In addition to the environmental benefits, this approach also makes financial sense; reducing energy consumption reduces our overheads, which in turn helps to avoid any increase in our food prices.

We hope that our experience proves that energy efficiency is both logical and sustainable, and that it will encourage others to follow suit.  The International  Energy Agency has predicted that by 2050 we can reduce the world's energy needs by one third if we all take similar measures.  This is a goal we are eager  to support and we are doing all we can to work towards a sustainable future.

Further details about some of the steps we have taken:

  • Switching to fluorescent tubing which lasts 6 -10 times longer than incandescent light bulbs.
  • Using low energy light bulbs which use 75% less energy.
  • Setting sleep modes on our computers which activate after 2 minutes of inactivity.
  • Installing a water meter and updating our plumbing to reduce water consumption.
  • Fitting a Water Buffalo to the toilet which saves 1 litre of water per flush.
  • Purchasing A++ rated appliances - including fridges and freezers.
  • Using rechargeable batteries.
  • Updating our computer system to the highest rating of EPEAT Gold 3,which is based on an evaluation of the environmental impact of a product considering how recyclable it is and how much energy it uses.
  • Using a electricity monitor on a regular basis to check the consumption of our appliances over a 24hr period.
